SEVENTH ANNUAL PAINT-OUT WEEK

February 18 through February 26, 2012

The Plein Air Artists of Riverside (PAAR), an artist group of the Riverside Art Museum, will have its 7^th Annual Paint-Out Week, February 18 – Feb. 26, 2012. Artists will paint in Plein Air by recreating various scenes along the beautiful, historic Riverside and its surrounding areas throughout the 9 days. In the tradition of the French Impressionists, they will capture the light and air of the scenes in front of them. The theme this year is “GEMS OF RIVERSIDE.”

2010 5th Annual Paint Out Exhibition - 3-5-2010 through 5-5-2010

The Plein Air Artists of Riverside affiliated with the Riverside Art Museum and the Riverside Arts Council, welcomes you to visit the Riverside Arts Project Gallery at 3545 Central Ave. Suite 508 to view 68 paintings from 46 artists who participated in the 9-Day Paint Out.

The artist painted throughout the Riverside area for 9 days painting Historical Bridges and Mission Inn Ave.

On Sunday Feb. 28, 2010 the artist competed in a "Quick Draw" which was judged by Ed Sotello. The artist checked in at the Riverside Arts Project at 8 am and were set up all around the Riverside Plaza on Central Ave. in Riverside, Ca. and ready to start painting at 9 am. Sean Faustina of the Riverside Plaza came over the loud speaker to welcome and start the artist. The competition lasted for 2 1/2 hours, the artist were then told to stop painting by Sean and headed to their cars to frame their wet paintings and turn them in for judging. The artist then treated themselves to lunch at Killarney's Pub and returned for the awards ceremony. The winners were:

After the awards the artist set up on the lawn in front of Riverside Arts Project for a "wet painting sale". The artist were allowed to show 4 of their favorite paintings from the event. After a very long day 48 artists and friends met for a celebration dinner at El Torito.

On Monday the artists turned in their one painting of their choice of the 9 locations to be in the exhibit and judged by noted plein air artist William Wray and were also allowed to turn in their Quick Draw painting which is also on display at the gallery.

On Sat. evening Mar. 6 from 6 to 9 the artist were celebrated by the public and many PAAR supporters to a wonderful evening of entertainment by guitarest Ellen Schwartz and an awards ceremony. Wine and cheese along with a chocolate fountain was enjoyed by all.

About PAAR

Six years ago, 12 individual artists came together to form the Plein Air Artists of Riverside in affiliation with the Riverside Art Museum. Our fellowship has since grown to over 75 members and has taken us many places throughout the Inland Empire, the beaches, and the deserts to paint on location.

The objective of a Plein Air artist is to capture the light as it falls on their subject using sight, sound, atmosphere, and temperature to reflect a moment in time while processing this on paper or canvas. Artists accomplish this in a very short amount of time. This tradition dates back to the 19th century where painters such as John Constable used his plein air sketches to paint huge paintings in his studio, Claude Monet and Edouard Degas who traditionally painted on location using a theory that what you saw in nature was not form but rather light on form and that light could be conveyed through color.

This past year, PAAR has painted many of the long standing and newly renovated California Missions, and we will continue to add more missions to our collection. Each year we have a 9 day paint out which includes a Quick Draw and wet painting sale followed by an exhibit and juried art show. Our goal is to share our paintings and experiences of the great outdoors with the public through exhibitions, demonstrations, and workshops and now this blog.
